the essay is a literary genre based on freedom – the themes are as free as the form: the backing of an essay is its commitment to thinking.
the four-monthly publication ‘serrote’ has been dedicated to the essay since 2008. the texts are always accompanied by images that, do not only illustrate them but, more than that, also serve as a commentary for what is read. the magazine also includes visual essays, in which the word is dispensed with and ideas are articulated by images.
as everything in the magazine is a conversation, editorial choices are also made based on this principle. thus, whichever the roles or titles of its editorial board, everything is everyone’s responsibility.
daniel trench has been the author of the magazine’s graphic design and art editor since its zero issue. the editorial project was developed by journalists flávio pinheiro and suzuki matinas; paulo roberto pires has been its editor since the fifth issue.
the project was published in ‘the history of graphic design. vol. 2. 1960-today ‘, tachen, 2017; and ‘brazil, a celebration of contemporary brazilian culture’, phaidon, 2014. highlight award at the 10th brazilian graphic design biennial, organized by adg brasil.
