an exhibition of paintings and drawings by raphael and emydgio, who attended the workshops of the national psychiatric centre, in engenho de dentro, rio de janeiro. under the guidance of the psychiatrist nise da silveira and the artist amir mavigner, the workshops emerged with the objective of creating alternatives to the aggressive procedures used in the treatment of psychiatric patients in the 1950s.
it is in this context that raphael’s drawings and emydgio’s paintings were made. rather than stigmatizing them under any label, the exhibition sheds light on a rich and little-known production — what is also suggested by the lettering of their visual identity.
