pinacoteca de são paulo, 2015
visual identity, signage and catalog for the retrospective exhibition of the irish artist sean scully at the pinacoteca de são paulo. the artist is a important representative of the transition from minimalist movements to geometric abstraction in painting.
curated by jacopo crivelli visconti, the exhibition was recorded in a publication that mirrors the raw materiality of the artist’s works — stencil typography; white silkscreen on black card on the cover; the exposed spine, revealing the sewing structure of the book; newsprint in the textbooks as opposed to the coated paper in the image notebooks. the catalog also includes a couple of pages with full-scale details of the paintings, where it is possible to observe the texture of the brushstrokes and their layers; and a visual index that at a glance relates the dimensions of the works exhibited so that the reader understands the great size variation of this selection of paintings.
